This monument stands today on Betio commemorating the battle for Tarawa and the Marine and Navy Personnel who gave their lives. A move is afoot (January 2002) to bring it back to the United States. It should be left where it is, as a grave marker for the many Americans who still lie beneath the soil of the island and are listed as "Missing In Action."
